Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
