Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
