Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
