Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
