Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
