Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
