Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
