Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
