Be cunning, play smart, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
