Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
