Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
