Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
