Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
