Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
