Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
