Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
