Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
