Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
