Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
