Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
