Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
