Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
