Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
